Multifamily Security Technology

Greetings,
The biggest PropTech news this week came from the Mile High State. The governor of Colorado vetoed a bill that would have made Colorado the first state to ban landlords from using rent-setting algorithms like RealPage’s YieldStar program. Governor Jared Polis explained his reasoning, ”We should not inadvertently take a tool off the table that could identify vacancies and provide consumers with meaningful data to help efficiently manage residential real estate to ensure people can access housing.” The move was applauded by RealPage and might make it harder for other states to pass similar bans.
This week, in partnership with Kastle, we’re taking a closer look at the future of multifamily security technology. While home security cameras have become nearly ubiquitous, they aren’t designed to meet the demands of commercial and multifamily properties. These buildings require smarter, more robust systems that go beyond motion detection. Tools like continuous video recording, AI-powered appearance search, and real-time incident alerts are essential for creating effective, scalable, and proactive security across multiple units and shared spaces.
Also, you might remember the buzz when robotic security guards first appeared on the scene in 2018. They generated plenty of headlines, especially after one famously took a tumble into a public fountain. For a brief moment, it looked like robots might revolutionize property patrols. But despite some initial deployments, they never became a fixture in the security landscape. This week, we’re exploring why that early excitement faded and what challenges have kept security robots from reaching widespread adoption in multifamily settings.
Let’s go!
