New Bamboo Structural Engineering Manual and What It Means for Construction

Data centers have become the backbone of the construction pipeline as less profitable building types fall out of favor. One of the industry’s biggest constraints has long been access to large water supplies for cooling. Microsoft’s push toward “no water” cooling technology could change that, opening new regions for development, particularly markets with abundant low-cost power. As data centers scale, they will continue drawing capital, labor, and talent away from office, retail, and multifamily projects, making new development in those sectors even harder to justify.

This week, we are talking about new light being shed on an old construction material: bamboo. Normally reserved for temporary installations such as scaffolding, bamboo’s low carbon footprint and strength are drawing new interest as a building material. A first-ever structural manual aims to unlock its potential by adding some standardization to the often variable organic material. Despite these advancements, regulatory and safety hurdles still stand in the way of mainstream adoption.
