Greetings!

Many properties still rely on outdated security systems, leaving them vulnerable to breaches. Traditional methods like analog CCTV and key fobs are often insufficient. Upgrading to IP cameras and integrating cloud-based and AI-powered solutions can greatly enhance security, providing better video quality, real-time access, and advanced analytics. These technologies streamline operations, improve response times, and support remote management, reducing costs and boosting efficiency. But, they also introduce new cybersecurity challenges. This week in Propmodo Technology, with support from Avigilon, we highlight the need to modernize commercial property security.

Hurricane Beryl has barreled through Texas, leaving millions of residents without power. Having so many people without electricity, particularly with no timeline for restoration, raises significant concerns. Power outages can endanger residents due to extreme temperatures and create hassles or even dangerous situations related to access control systems.

Most access control systems and smart locks have batteries to provide backup power during outages. But, these batteries have a finite amount of electricity and can run out if power is not restored promptly. Also, batteries degrade over time, so houses and buildings need to check and replace them periodically to be prepared for prolonged outages.

Access control systems for larger buildings must be configured to respond appropriately to power outages. Door locks can be programmed to either "fail safe" or "fail secure." Fail safe locks automatically open during a power outage, allowing occupants to leave the building and preventing dangerous situations where someone might be trapped inside. Fail secure locks, on the other hand, lock themselves during a power outage to prevent theft or unwanted access to certain areas. Often, buildings will have some locks set to fail safe and others to fail secure, requiring installers and property managers to carefully plan for emergencies.

With extreme weather and overused energy grids making power outages more common across the country, building owners and managers must proactively plan for emergencies and maintain critical systems like access control. It’s easy to assume that something as simple as a door lock will function during a power outage, but in today’s connected buildings, that might not always be the case.
