Security technology is getting more capable at the same time that people are becoming more sensitive to how it is used. That tension is showing up dramatically in cities across the country, where communities are pushing back against automated license plate readers and the enormous databases they create. The growing backlash to camera networks is worth watching for building owners because public attitudes toward surveillance rarely stop at the property line.

That does not mean buildings should retreat from smarter security. Residents still expect safer garages, better package protection, convenient entry, and faster responses when something goes wrong. The challenge is increasingly about designing systems that provide those benefits without becoming intrusive, opaque, or impossible to change. In that sense, transparency and flexibility are becoming almost as important as the technology itself.

That same flexibility is starting to reshape access control. Owners once had good reason to worry that an expensive upgrade could become obsolete before it paid for itself, but modular hardware and interoperable systems are making that less likely. New approaches to future-proofing access control allow properties to upgrade gradually, swap out credential technology as standards change, and avoid betting the entire building on whatever happens to be cutting edge today.

💄 Marketing makeover
New York legislature has introduced legislation requiring real estate agents to disclose when AI has been used to materially alter listing photos, targeting changes that add, remove, or modify physical elements of a property beyond standard editing like brightness and cropping. The bill would also require brokers to include a link to the original unedited images alongside any altered versions, though it carries no financial penalties and is not expected to be taken up until the Legislature reconvenes in January 2027.

⛏️ Material disclosure
Researchers have developed a tool called Urban Mining Screener that identifies raw materials and building elements, including concrete, bricks, and timber, embedded in Austria's existing building stock, with the goal of making those resources available for reuse and recycling rather than extraction. The tool is part of a broader push toward circular economy thinking in construction, where understanding what materials are already locked inside buildings could help demolition contractors plan more efficiently and help manufacturers better source recycled inputs.

🪏 Construction tech cash
Buildots, a Tel Aviv-based startup that converts jobsite video footage into 3D digital twins and real-time construction tracking, has raised $130 million led by O.G. Venture Partners, bringing its total funding to $297 million. The company works with major contractors including JE Dunn, Mortenson, and Hochtief, Turner Construction's parent company, and says seven-figure multiyear contracts have become standard rather than exceptions.
